The Last Call

for Piano Trio (2021)

"Plant and animal extinction is occurring at a rate of at least 1,000 times faster than the time before human existence."

The Last Call is an ironical re-interpretation of traditional birdsong, in which the main theme is inspired by the last recorded mating call of a Hawaiian bird named Kauaʻi ʻōʻō before their extinction. The piece comments on the unfortunate status of nature and mock human tendency which often naively overlook the issue.

The work is mainly constructed around the manipulation of the main theme, which transforms into depictions of nature – birds, forests and even human, ourselves. The irony is that I also, as a human being, am guilty of this tragedy. The work, therefore, is not hatred towards humanity, but a commentary, in which I hope to call attention to the issue.
