SPIRAL

For Mallet Quartet

Golden ratio, also known as the golden section, golden mean, or divine proportion, in mathematics, the irrational number (1 + Square root of√5)/2, often denoted by the Greek letter ϕ or τ, which is approximately equal to 1.618.

Spiral is a piece inspired by the mathematical beauty found in nature, that is present in the most subconscious level of our anatomy and nature of the universe, known as the “Golden Ratio”. The performers should take note of the layout of sections that strictly follows the rule of “Fibonacci sequence” (in context it follows 13, 8, 5 and 3), which portrays the impression of winding in Spiral. As the piece is constructed strictly on rhythmic variation (mostly fragmentation) of the first appearing motif, one is advised to follow the rhythmic gesture strictly, however anticipating certain changes are permissible in a moderate level. Take note of the shape of the piece at its entirety, as well as the development of each segment.
